... no honestly it does... science says so!
Today is a good day! Not only is it the first day of Spring, but it’s also the International Day of Happiness, so if that doesn’t make you smile, we're not sure what will… Oh, wait, yes we do… PIZZA!
And yes, I know what you’re thinking, of course, we’d say pizza makes you happy, we sell kits to help you make them! But honestly, this isn’t coming from us! People much cleverer, with super smart science skills, have degreed, Pizza Makes You Happy!
Something smells gooooooooooooooood
Scientists can often be found undertaking groundbreaking work such as developing the COVID vaccine or eradicating Polio, but every now and then they conduct research that allows us to understand the mysteries of the universe…like why does pizza smell so good and why does it become irresistible?
Frozen pizza manufacturers DiGiorno conducted a social experiment that measured the effect of pizza on the mood of partygoers. They put on three parties in three homes and rigged each home with cameras and recording equipment to capture footage of the guests while the pizza was baking in the oven, when they saw it and when they ate it.
Facial recognition and emotion-tracking software allowed them to identify patterns in emotion at each of these stages, and the results were interesting!
“Across all three gatherings, when the smell of pizza permeated the room, it coincided with the highest observable increase in joy – even greater than levels reached when the pizza was actually being eaten.”
It’s not just our hearts that long for gooey pizza-goodness, our brains do too! Foods that contain salt, fat, and sugar are desired by the human brain as they are energy-rich which keeps us fuller for longer - a basic survival mechanism!
We don’t even need to be physically eating pizza for our brains to enjoy it! Even at the thought of pizza, our brains release dopamine, a chemical that is connected to reward, meaning that we feel physically good! Pretty cool huh!
And not only that, carbohydrates in the dough are essential to good physical and mental health! Carbs cause our brains to put out another chemical, this time called serotonin which is also known as ‘the happy hormone’ which improves your mood and plays a very big role in emotional well-being!
It brings us together
Pizza is great if you eat it on your own, but it’s even better when you eat it with other people! The act of eating a pizza with others becomes a shared experience, which those brain box scientists say helps to establish trust and build bonds!
Go on...make yourself happy!
